Does Dow Jones 30 (DIA) actually work?

REAL

A measurable edge that survived the checks we ran.

The claim

Dow Jones 30 is the index to own — What people actually buy

What we did

Tested against Cap-weight S&P 500, buy & hold, 2004-2026, buy & hold, adjusted total-return.

The result

Result: 9.8 %/yr buy & hold (2004-2026)

+9.8%/yr, Sharpe 0.61, worst drawdown -52% (2008 -32%, 2022 -7%)

Verdict

The old-economy Dow: lower long-run return (+9.8%/yr) but the best crisis behavior in 2022 (-7%) thanks to its value tilt. A steadier large-cap ride for less upside.

What the test did and did not do

Almost nobody publishing a backtest says which of these they did. We list the ones we failed as well as the ones we passed.

Tested 2026-06-23. The same treatment, applied to every other system, is on the test bench.
